Third Outpost Artist Residency
Exploring focus, noise, and mediated perception through sound-reactive environments.
October 2025
During the Third Outpost Artist Residency, I created a sound-reactive installation built from a 3D scan of the residency building. Using PolyCam to capture the space and TouchDesigner to convert the OBJ model into a point cloud, I programmed each point to respond dynamically to ambient sound.
The work became a meditation on focus, noise, and the conditions required to create, both the physical noise of the space and the internal noise of attention. Through microphones and cameras, I practiced seeing and listening through machines, continuing my interest in cyborgism and mediated perception.
Installation Setup
The installation was displayed on a CRT monitor connected to a mini PC running TouchDesigner, forming a closed loop of digital and analog technologies.
Each sound in the space, recorded, amplified, or ambient, altered the behavior of the point cloud in real time, turning the building into a living, responsive digital echo of itself.
Embodied Practice
An important part of this short residency was learning to feel at home in the space. Together with fellow artist Julia Meles, I took time to slow down and physically connect with the environment, stretching, listening, and moving through each corner of the building.
Although this exercise was more in line with Julia’s performance-based practice, it became a key moment for me to reconnect with my own body inside a process that’s usually mediated through machines. This grounding experience balanced the digital focus of my work and helped me understand the space beyond its data form.
