‘I Always wanted to be an Actress’

‘I always wanted to be an actress’ is a multimedia installation created using projectors, televisions, and web cameras. The piece was installed in MCAD from 11/11/22 to 11/22/22. The viewer walks into a room and is immediately encapsulated by the large block of text on the wall. This text is excerpted from a diary continuously typing for two hours and fifty minutes. While reading the text on the wall, the viewer is tracked by a motion-tracking device installed on the ceiling. From there, the viewer is labeled with the text “user” on multiple key points on their body. Next, the viewer can turn to see a live stream of themselves on a monitor situated in the corner of the room. This monitor presents a live stream of the entire room.

This piece has to do with surveillance in the digital age. With a live stream projected on a monitor, the viewer is given this feeling of being watched. The projection of the diary allows the viewer to feel a vulnerability attached to this feeling. A stream of consciousness. The motion tracking device, causes the viewer to have a sense of feeling followed. Something that is all too familiar in this day of age.
