‘Check Up’

“Check up” is an installation that challenges the definition of a “game.” Conceptually, much of my game takes inspiration by Lauren Lee McCarthy, thinking about the range of emotions that come with using technology. This interactive experience was installed on the third floor of MCAD. The installation takes inspiration from McCarthy’s bright, exposed installations using a simple color palette and focusing on minimal senses and windows peering over the center of the school. The game only allows a reward after an excruciating experience of smiling for over 2 minutes. Causing the user to feel exposed and in pain. There is another screen notating the user’s emotions and displaying it for other viewers to witness, furthering the idea of exposure.

As you can see in the video, the user stands between two screens to interact with this piece. Each screen is controlling a different facial recognition program. The screen on the left is controlling a game where the ball is rolled into a hole. While the screen on the right controls a program which detects whether the user is feeling happy, sad or neutral. The user must be centered directly between each of these screen in order to be recognized by the software.
