Phenology Shanty

Over the past month, I worked and volunteered at the Phenology Shanty on the frozen surface of Bde Maka Ska in Minneapolis. Phenology is the study of seasonal cycles, movement, and migration. These ideas felt especially present as Minneapolis experienced heightened immigration enforcement during this period.

Methods

I created a site-responsive audiovisual projection for the shanty during an after-hours gathering, inviting people onto the ice for a temporary dance and moment of reflection. The projection featured butterflies and bird murmurations, drawing connections between ecological migration and the fundamental right to freedom of movement. The visuals were created in TouchDesigner and driven by audio input, shifting and distorting in real time with the beat of the music.
